    Booze is for darts cheats
    GARY
ANDERSON has called for oche bosses to impose a BOOZE BAN on players.
The Berwick ace wants PDC chiefs to bring in the ground-breaking new rule to give the game
    a squeaky-clean image.

Table-topper Ando, who faces Adrian Lewis in the Premier League at the SECC tomorrow night,
said: "The game is so much different now than it was in the 70s and 80s.

"The old days of players like Jocky Wilson and Co supping pints and shorts on stage
are well gone and there's only a select amount who do still actually drink.

"But it's obviously a well-known fact that some players have a couple to calm nerves
before a game. The daft thing is we get drug-tested after some matches and I'd
a couple of tests during the world championships.

"How crazy is that? I can drink alcohol to help my game but not drugs. I don't think
that makes a great deal of sense.

"It's even dafter that I almost failed one drug test because I drink so much coffee
and my caffeine levels were too high."But if I'd drunk ten pints I would have been okay!

"If one of my rivals has a couple of drinks to help him stay calm and focused -
surely that's no different from a form of cheating. Don't get me wrong, I don't
need a drink as a rule and I suffer badly from nerves. But I have been known to
    drink to help settle me.

"Before the first Premier League meeting at the O2 Arena last month, because of the
size of venue and crowd, I was so nervous I had a couple of vodkas to calm me
    down before the match.

"It's very difficult to judge how the alcohol will help your game. It certainly
blocks out the crowd noise - but it can also make you erratic when it starts to
    wear off.

"It would make life very interesting if the PDC banned alcohol completely - whether
for one tournament or for all events.

"I think that applies to all sports to be honest.

"I'm sure it goes on in snooker and golf and I've no doubts there must have been a
few footballers and rugby players over the years who have played hungover and
still have alcohol in their blood.

"Maybe it's time to draw a line in the sand and ban it altogether.

"That way we can have a level playing field.

"I also think that it would make people outside darts take us a lot more seriously
as a proper sport, like they should."

Ando's quick to stress that drinking isn't widespread among the top names - but he's
keen for the new crop of outstanding youngsters to stay off the bevvy.

He said: "Darts is so different now. We have athletic players and lots of
competitors who don't touch a drop. But if there was a clear rule it would stop the youth players relying on a drink as
part of their game to calm the nerves.

"If the rule is there from the start of their careers, then they'd never need to
    touch a drop.

"We have a fantastic new Unicorn youth set-up now - it would be a great time to
    bring in this rule.

"I certainly know I could deal with a booze ban. My big problem would be if it was
a a caffeine ban - I'm still drinking about 30 cups of coffee a day.

"Maybe they could make the first non-alcohol event be sponsored by Costa Coffee or
Nescafe - that would be perfect for me!"

Anderson's showdown with Lewis is a much-awaited rematch of their world final - when the
Englishman triumphed - and will played out in front of 8,000 fans in Glasgow.

    Ando added:
"It's a dream come true to be top of the Premier League and walking out in
    front of my own people.

"However, I need to win the match for the crowd.

"I'd sell my soul to beat Adrian just for this night - it means that much to
    me."
