PDC World Matchplay 2010

  • Allwissender dartos, Dein Wissen wird benötigt.

AS a comedy hypnotist Sean Casey-Poole is used to getting people to do daft things on stage.
But tomorrow he’ll be playing another compere role straight as an arrow when he referees a darts match on TV.

As a teenager the 45-year-old Coventry man dreamt of becoming a successful darts player.
While the dad-of-two never quite made it as a pro, he will be taking his place on the big darts stage when he referees at the Stan James World Matchplay tournament.

At 8pm he will be the caller in the match between Colin Osborne and Wayne Jones at the Professional Darts Corporation tournament in Blackpool.
Sean is no stranger to the TV cameras. Three years ago he and his wife took part in a BBC documentary that challenged families to pay off their mortgages within two years.
Sean, of Tile Wood Avenue, Eastern Green, said: “I am absolutely over the moon.

“When I went for the trial for PDC they said it could be nine to 12 months before I heard back from them. But that was only a month ago.”

Sean, whose comedy stage name is Mickey Take, started playing darts when he was 17 and was part of the Warwickshire and Worcester county darts teams.
A few years later he became semi-pro but struggled to make it into the big time. He eventually gave up trying to make it as a professional player when he was 26.

He said: “When I started losing all my games I thought it’s time to give up. I knew my limits and I won opens, but I wasn’t good enough to get to that next level. My dad was always there encouraging me but when I lost him to cancer and he wasn’t there, I couldn’t be bothered anymore. It wasn’t the same.

“But I knew that if I didn’t make it as a darts player, I still wanted to be involved in the sport and I fell in love with calling.”

Sean has previously been a caller for Warwickshire County Darts matches before being picked by PDC.

He said he’s not feeling too nervous about his TV debut, which will be watched at home by wife Anne-Marie and their two children.

He said: “Darts is a massive business now. It just gets bigger and bigger and is now being played in huge arenas. But I always say if you don’t have any nerves at all then it is time to worry. I’m used to being on the stage but a bit of nerves spurs me on.

“People say they can’t believe how quick I can count when I’m up there, but I don’t even think about it.

“Being an ex-player I know what shots the players are going to take next and know what they are going to go for.”
The tournament, featuring top darts players including Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld, will be played in front of 3,000 fans and broadcast live on Sky Sports.
