I’ve heard it reported many times that the BDO veteran, Martin
Fitzmaurice has a tendency to use his position as darts MC to tell
racist jokes at BDO darts events, but as I’ve only been a ‘PDC boy’ I’ve
never had that displeasure.
Well in a streamed home internationals event, Fitzmaurice did himself
no favours by not only telling a couple of childish and offensive
racist jokes, he also bemoaned the BBC and their ‘political correctness’
for not letting him tell them during the Lakeside.
If nothing else (apart from being quite sad), it shows that Martin is
a century or two behind reality, something critics of the BDO have
often leveled at the organisation as a whole.
Well it’s time for the BDO board to show their mettle now – and move
on without Martin.. and bring in someone fresher, and possibly with a
more 21st century attitude to the world.
OK some mates will tell an off joke when together or down the pub,
but we’re talking about a ‘professional’ sporting event, being streamed
to the world here. If the BDO allow him to continue, it will show just
how far behind the PDC they are, and I hope the BBC and ESPN step in and
refuse to allow such a person to stand in front of the TV cameras ever
again.
Plus let’s get Little Richard up on that stage – he’s got more darts
knowledge in his little finger than the current sweaty disgrace!
Here’s part of the stream, about 1 minute 50 seconds in comes the
worst of it. I hope the BBC and ESPN see this. I know that the darts
writer and quite mad darts tweeter Lenny Boyle has also written about this – and it’s been a hot topic of conversation on the darts forums.
The BDO website says they are taking action – but it as yet does not go into any detail: http://www.bdodarts.com/2129/0…ENT_re_MARTIN_FITZMAURICE. It’s
odd though that I’ve been told he’s often like this at BDO events – so
has their stance suddenly changed, or has it only changed because he’s
been found out on video? (pdc-darts.co.uk)
